Although the Newport Common Burial Grounds records state that Joseph (2) is buried there, without a stone, that isn't necessarily the case. Just a few words on Newport research, from Vincent F. Luti's "Mallet & Chisel:Gravestone Carvers of Newport, Rhode Island, in the 18th Century," p. 8:
"Genealogical research on colonial Newport is complicated by the poor state of many of the surviving documents, which were damaged during the Revolution. In 1778, after nearly three years of British occupation, Newport was under heavy siege. Walter Chaloner, the town sheriff and a Tory, fled on a British man-of-war with all the probate records, deeds, and vital records under his jurisdiction. His ship ran aground in New York Harbor. Retrieved from the watery depths, the boxes were left in storage for some time. When they were finally unpacked, the extent of the damage was revealed. The remnants of the records are now preserved in bound volumes at the Newport Historical Society, but the contents of any given page may be from different documents, often of different dates. Furthermore, almost all are faded to differing degrees of indecipherability..."
Fully 1/2 or more of the documents were lost, so it's hard to draw many conclusions in Newport.

!SOURCE: Email from Charles M. Whipple, Jr., to Weldon Whipple, 4 Oct 2003. Charles writes: "I am now convinced that Lieutenant Governor Joseph Whipple Jr. was Anglican not Quaker. I received a reply from Harvard University finally. His son, William, graduated in 1749 at the head of his class. His biography notes that he was indeed Church of England as was Col. Joseph Whipple, his father. So, although Lieutenant Governor Joseph Whipple III and his mother, as well as some siblings may have been Quakers, at least it is now known that this was indeed a religiously mixed marriage."

Page 74 has the following entry:
20 July 1784 - Anne Borden, on her examination before the Town Council, stated that she was then in her thirtieth year, the daughter of Matthew and Sarah Borden of Newport, where she had been born. At about sixteen, she came to live at Providence at the house of Thomas Greene as one of his family, she being related to his wife. She never served any apprenticeship or owned any real estate at Providence. Anne signed her name. The Town Council rejected her from being an inhabitant of Providence and adjudged that the City of Newport was the place of her last legal settlement. As Anne was likely to become chargeable to the town, the clerk was ordered to issue his warrant for her removal to Newport unless she removed herself within a fortnight or procure a certificate from the City of Newport acknowledging her as an inhabitant of that city and promising to indemnify this town from all charges incurred by her or by the child with which she was then pregnant. I emailed the Newport Historical Society and Bert Lippincott, reference librarian & and genealogist, said: "Anne’s parents are included in my notes on the Abraham Redwood family of Newport, through the Whipples. Her mother died before 1764 and it seems she went to live with her aunt Amy (Whipple) Greene, wife of Thomas Greene of Bristol, Providence and Woodstock, CT. Thomas sold his Providence lands in 1784 during a time of profound economic uncertainty. We can check the Newport Town Council and Treasurer’s records for residency and support. We can also check the Quaker minutes to see if Anne came to live with some of her numerous Quaker relatives and required support and/or disciplinary actions."
