      State of New York, Oswego County
      Ephraim Whipple of Elby in Genesee County in said state personally appeared before one of the Justices of the Peace of Mexico in said County of Owsego on the 8th day of Feb 1838 and says that some time in the summer season of 1778 or 1779 Caleb Whipple with whom deponent is personally acquainted, did reside in Plainfield in the State of Connecticut and that said Caleb did enlist in Service of the said State of Connecticut and was stationed at New London and while there he was wounded and during his confinement deponent visited him there and when sufficiently recovered went and brought him home and that when said Caleb was so recovered as to perform duty he returned [to] his regiment again to complete his nine Months service for which he was enlisted and that after the completion of the said nine Months said Caleb did enlist again for one year in the service of the said State of Connecticut and did serve one year. And further said deponent saith not. --Ephm Whipple

          {NAC note: this census would indicate possibly 6 children--Orrell under 10 male, Anson 10-16, Collins 16-18, Ephraim 45+, Laura under 10, Aschah 26-45, leaving "undiscovered" 1 male b. bet. 1804-1810 & 1 male b. bet. 1794-1802, prob. closer to 1802.}
      • 1830 Census, Byron, Genesee, NY p.372
        • Wipple, Ephraim: males 1 10-15, 1 20-30, 1 60-70; females 1 5-10, 1 15-20, 1 40-50

        • Whipple, Achsah: 1 male 30-40, 1 female 50-60 {living next to Samuel Scofield; as she is head of household in this census, it is likely that Ephraim died bet. 1830-1840}
        • Scofield, Samuel: 1 male 30-40; females 2 under 5, 1 20-30
          Ancestry World Tree (AWT) notes that Achsah, wife of Ephrom (sic) Whipple {102177, b. abt 1780 in Rutland, VT per AWT}, was born October 15, 1782 in Cambridge, Washington, NY.

      !SOURCE: Email from John Davis (undisclosed at example dot net) to the Whipple Website, 13 Apr 2013. Identifies two Ephraims (one born 9 Feb 1768 in Coventry, Kent, RI, who signed a handwritten deposition while living in Elby [sic], Genewee County, New York, stating that he knew Caleb; the other mentioned in 1820, 1830 censuses (but not 1840). Those two Ephraims are now merged into this one.
