!CONFLICT: In email dated 27 Dec 1999, Blaine Whipple writes: "You [Arthur Whipple] indicated they were born in Kittery, Maine. The History of La Salle County, Illinois (p. 341) states that Samuel was born in Vermont (now town listed) and that Hannah was a native of Connecticut."It gives Edwin D. Whipple's birth date as 26 May 1849 in Woonstock, CT and identifies his brother as Henry S. rather than Samuel Henry. Edwin was 'reared and educated in Tolland County and was engaged in the manufacture of boots and shoes with Marcy Bros. & Co., of Hartford, CT until 1878. He then came to Rutland, Ill. and clerked for his brother, Henry S. Whipple until 1883, after which he dealt in groceries, boots, and shoes in Rutland. In April 1884 he moved to Lostant, Hope township and immediately established his present business and is now one of the leading merchants of Lostant.
"'He was appointed Postmaster at Lostant Nov. 13, 1885. He married Mary A. Ames, daughter of Zimri F. Ames of Rutland, an early settler of La Salle County. To Mr. and Mrs. Whipple has been born one child -- Merrick A.'"
