!MILITARY: Served in Company C, 11th New Hampshire Infantry during the U.S. Civil War. Enlisted 18 Aug 1862. Taken prisoner in Knowville, Tenn., 22 Nov 1863 and died in the Andersonville (Ga.) Prison Camp. --J. Lahr-Kreischer

!SOURCE: Email from undisclosed at example dot net to Weldon Whipple, 18 Feb 2005. Gives the following
Taken prisoner, Civil War at Knoxville Tenn Nov 23,1863, nothing more heard of him . (he later history tells how the author found John in prison close to death but able to recognize him.) Neither of the histories indicate John had a wife or child although there are other unofficial records of a child born to him and Helen Ober 1861. They could very well have been married and left off the histories. I have not found a pension record for the wife and the child died as an infant, perhaps prior to enlistment. No further record as to when Helen died.
(Those Wonderful Years, a History of New Boston)
Corporal John Whipple Jr, died at Anderson Prison 6.25.1864. He left New Boston on his 27th birthday to join the 11th NH Volunteers. After 13 mos of fighting he was taken prisoner at Knoxville Tennesee 11.23.1863. He had been sent with a special detail of 30 men needed for reinforcements and a demand was made for a man to go some rods in front as a lookout in advance of pickets to give the alarm in case of the approach of the enemy. As no one responded, Whipple volunteered to go. The enemy cut his retreat and he was captured. From Nov 1863 to March 1864 he was at Belle Island and then taken to Andersonville Prison in GA where he died.
(History of Company C, William F. Fish, pg 528)
Corp John Whipple was found (by the author of this history) living in a hut at the back south gate in the last stages of diarrhea and scurvy with his feet and legs badly swollen. He was emaciated, frail but his face lightened with a smile of recognition as we grasped hands. His captors had robbed him of his boots and made him march to VA over frozen ground. He suffered throught he winter with cold, hunger and exposure at Richmond. John would not go into the hospital, preferring to remain with his friends and on June 25th he died. He was noble-hearted and faithful to duty.
