    • !SOURCE: Email from N. Combs to Weldon Whipple, 12 Aug 2007. She writes:
      I'd like to suggest that:
      1. Jonah Whipple {94966} is the Jonah Whipple (age 63 at death) who was buried Oct. 27, 1844 in the Owasco Rural Cemetery, Owasco, Cayuga, NY (http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycayuga/cem/cem155.htm);
      2. Jonah Whipple {94966} is the father of Jonah Whipple {109316};
      3. Lida (Lydia) Whipple (age 79 at death) bur. Apr 22, 1866 in the Owasco Rural Cemetery, Owasco, Cayuga, NY (http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycayuga/cem/cem155.htm) is Jonah's wife and mother of Jonah Whipple {109316}.
      Reasons:
      1. It would be easy for a transcriber/tombstone reader to interpret 1844 as 1847 (or vice versa), and the Oct. 27 date is too coincidental;
      2. Jonah Whipple {109316} and other members of his family are also buried in the Owasco Rural Cemetery;
      3. The coincidence of Jonah Whipple {109316} being named Jonah and that he has a daughter Lydia {109321};
      4. The elder, widowed, Lydia Whipple is living next to Jonah Whipple {109316} on both the 1850 and 1860 censuses (see below);
      5. Marshall Whipple {94697} and Harvey Whipple {94970} relocated from VT to Cayuga County, NY; brothers often moved "west" together at that time
      • Aug. 16, 1850 Census, Niles, Cayuga, NY, p.146
        • head - Van Gorder, John 46 b. PA
        • Van Gorder, Maria 41 b. VT
        • Whipple, Lydia 63 b. MA {abt 1787}
      • June 14, 1860 Census, Niles, Cayuga, NY, p.922 (10)
        • head - Van Gorder, Maria 51 b.MA
        • Whipple, Lydia 74 b. MA
      I could further speculate that Maria Van Gorder is Maria Whipple, Lydia and Jonah's daughter, as widowed women often lived with their daughter, but that's probably going too far.
