Caleb J. Norwood, of the firm C. Norwood & Son, manufactures of isinglass at Ipswich, Mass., has been intimately associated witht he business interests of the town since reaching man's estate. This industry was first started here by Seth Norwood more than half a century ago, but after a few years trial it was abandoned. In 1857 Caleb Norwood, the frather of Caleb J., established the present plant at Norwood's mills about three miles west of the village of Ipswich, having as a partner his brother-in-law James Manning, of Rockport. After the retirement of the latter Mr. Norwood admitted his son into partnership; the firm name being changed from Norwood & Manning to C. Norwood & Son. The company of Messrs. Norwood, working night and day, employs thirty-five hands and puts out annually five hundred cases of insinglass of one hundred and twenty-five pounds each. There are about four other factories of the kind in existence. In additon the firm has a saw-mill and a grist-mill, which have extensive business.

Caleb Norwood who was born in Rockport, Mass., in 1808, died in Ipswich in 1870. During his earlier years he was master of a coast vessel. In 1850 he went to California as agent for Eastern ship-owners. On his return from the pacific coast he conducted a hotel in Rockport for a time, and then removed to Ipswich. He married Jershua Butman, of Rockport, who survived him, dying in 1875. They reared two children, namely: Fiducia, a resident of Rockport, who never married; and Caleb J., the subject of this biography.
Born and bred in Rockport, Caleb J. Norwood, came from there to Ipswich when he was eighteen years old. He has since been connected to the factory. As first as a workman, he came familar with the details of the manufacturing process. Afterwards he became a member of the firm and since the death of his father has had the entire management of the place. The company has consistantly increased in size and value, and now ranks among the the leading industries of the town. The water power of the factory has been one of the longest in use in the State. The first dam on this part of the river was built two hundred years ago for a carding-mill and a grist-mill. Mr. Norwood's first wife, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Rowe, died in early womenhood, leaving 2 children. The latter are: William Jerome, who carries on the grist-mill, is married, and has one son; and Alice D., who recently married Lincoln Ross of Rockford, Illinois. Mr. Norwood, subsequently married Miss Martha A., daughter of William A. Dane, of Hamilton. They have two children Grace Almira, the wife of Harry E. Bailey, of Boston; and Charles A., a student at the Boston Latin School. Mrs. Bailey, a elocutionist of rare power, while yet a young girl won commendation, not only from public press, but from such high authorities as Gail Hamilton and John Greenleaf Whitter.

Mr. Norwood is well endowed with the success-compelling qualities of industry and foresight. Through his kindly intelligence and sterling integrity, he has won the regard of all in his community. He is director of the First National Bank of Ipswich. In 1888 he served in the Commitee of Public Safety in the State House of Representatives, representing the district composed of the towns of Hamilton, Wenham and Ipswich. He was nominated for the legislature without his knowledge or consent; and he was elected in this Republican stronghold, though at that time he was one of the most active Democrats in this section part of the county. Since 1896, however, Mr. Norwood has acted with the Republican Party.

The article "John Smith, the Miller, of Providence Rhode Island: Some of His Descendants," by Charles William Farnham, in _Genealogies of Rhode Island Families from Rhode Island Periodicals_ (Baltimore: Genealogical Pub. !SOURCE: Email from N. Combs to the Whipple Website, 10 Aug 2001. Norma writes:
"Let me offer some primary sources (Bible records and Arnold's VR) on the inconsistency of who Barbara Rice, d/o Elnathan (Whipple) and John Rice married. This Barbara Rice was born April 24, 1706 in Warwick (Arnold's VR) and married John Langford on May 11, 1727 in East Greenwich, RI (Arnold's VR). Births of six of their children are recorded in East Greenwich, RI (Arnold's VR).

The Barbara Rice who married Benjamin Arnold was born March 18, 1723/24 (Arnold Bible records copied 1936 by Josephine Keefer Short and available at the RI Historical Society). She was the daughter of John Rice, Jr. (1696-1746/7), the s/o John and Elnathan (Whipple) Rice, and Avis Tibbetts (d. 1760), making her the niece of the first Barbara Rice and still a Whipple descendant.

81 !CONFLICT: William Wyman Fiske (see below, p. 212) gives Mary Whipple's husband as Richard Jacobs, with the marriage taking place in Ipswich 15 Jan 1673, citing (in footnote 126) "Vital Records of Ipswich [supra note 118], 2:454." In the referenced note 118, the full title is given as "Vital Records of Ipswich, Massachusetts, to the End of the Year 1849," 3 vols. (Salem: Essex Institute, 1910-19). Blaine Whipple (see below, p. 2:G13), on the other hand, gives Mary's husband as John Emery, whom she married in Ipswich (no date given). The appearance of both spouses in the Whipple Genweb does not mean that Mary married both men.
