!SOURCE: Descendancy chart of Gabriel Bernon, submitted 6 Feb 2007 by Blaine Whipple to Weldon Whipple. Spells name Gabriel Bernon, confirming father's name, birth date and place and death date. Also confirms date of marriage to Esther LeRoy (his first wife). Blaine additionally writes:
Gabriel Bernon, was a merchant at Rochelle and early in life engaged in commercial enterprises in Canada where he occasionally resided. He was in prison in France in 1685 for being a practicing Protestant. After release in 1686, he fled to Amsterdam and in February 1687 was in London. He arrive in Boston 5 July 1688 on the ship Dolphin from Gravesend and acquired 2,672 acres of land at Oxford, MA where he built a grist-mill. A French community existed there for several years. He lived in Boston and was engaged in the manufacture of rosin and salt. He made commercial trips to London in 1693 and 1696 and in 1697 was in Newport, RI. After his first wife's death in 1710, he moved from Newport (where she is buried) to Providence. After a few years in Providence, he moved to Wickford, moving back to Providence in 1719. His will, dated 16 Feb. 1728, was proved 16 Feb. 1736.

The following obituary was printed in Boston 19 July 1736: On the first instant, departed this life at Providence, Mr. Gabriel Bernon in the 92nd year of his age. He was a gentleman by birth and estate, born in Rochelle, in France, and about fifty years ago he left his native country, and the greatest part of his estate; and for the cause of true religion fled into New England, where he has ever since continued and behaved himself as a zealous Protestant professor. He was courteous, honest and kind, and died in great faith and hope in his Redeemer, and assurance of salvation; and has left a good name among his acquaintances. He evidenced the power of christianity in his great sufferings, by leaving his country and his great estate, that he might worship God according to his conscience. He was decently buried under the Episcopal church at Providence, and a great concourse of people attended his funeral, to whom the Rev. Mr. Brown preached an agreeable and eloquent funeral sermon, from Psalms xxxix:4.
