- !SOURCE: Email from B. Huckins to Weldon Whipple, 4 May 2008:
Given the age difference between Henry Clay and his wife [Mary Jane Austin] it is quite possible Henry was married previously and had children although I could find none in the census. In the 1880 Woonsocket census he is 40 years old and listed as married but no wife is listed at the residence where he boards. In 1910 he is in Cumberland, age 70, married 15 years and gives wife's name as Mary J age 50. In the 1920 census their ages are not consistent but he is listed as Henry C., 85, farmer and she as Mary J. 63, b RI, father b England, m b MA. The Roster of the Massachusetts 15th Infantry Div lists him as Henry Clay Whipple, son of Ahab, and gives a brief genealogy noting wife as Mary Jane Austin dau of James. He is on the pension list with Mary J. surviving him.
