!SOURCE: Email from Joan Hall Stolar Smith (email hidden) to the Whipple Website 6 Mar 2016. Joan writes:You will find Samuel and Moses Hall, sons of Samuel Hall and Lydia Whipple, were born in the town of Brookfield -- Samuel on July 30, 1767 and Moses on September 5, 1769. There are no records of their births in either Grafton or Spencer. You will note that Samuel was born barely 7 months after Samuel and Lydia married on Dec. 18, 1766. This may explain their move to Brookfield very soon after their marriage, as pregnancy before marriage could have resulted in some form of punishment, even though the couple married. Apparently birth dates were carefully checked to be sure the proper amount of time had passed between marriage and birth. Moving to Brookfield might have minimized the chance that these dates would be compared, and also may have avoided the social stigma of an early birth.
