Jane and Joseph moved to Kirtland, Ohio in 1834 and while he was away on a Mormon Mission, she took in washing to help feed the family. They left for Far West, Caldwell, Co., Mo. in June 1838 where they survived the 30 October Mormon massacre at Haun's Mill. They stayed with family and friends in various Missouri locations until moving to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Ill. in 1840. They left Nauvoo for Winter Quarters, Nebr. in 1849 and in the summer of 1850 left for the Salt Lake Valley.
